It also became clear to me, more often than not, that owners and entrepreneurs really had no idea how to do this effectively and consistently! Not because they didn’t have the brain power or the experience, but rather because there is too much information and too little value out there to sift through, so they would quickly give up the research to focus on maintaining their business.


So I became obsessed with understanding and working with the business owner mindset as both an art and a science! Yes, I became like a mad scientist: I wanted to know every detail and factor that went into the perfect owner mindset, leading to their decisions regarding the growth and operations of their businesses.

There Are Six Tactics For Evaluating and Changing Your Business Behaviour That Lead To Growth And Success

You MUST have these 6 tactics in mind BEFORE you even begin your business scaling process. They are crucial in creating and acting on the growth processes that will produce the results you’ve been dreaming of.

As the key business owner, you must start off with your own self-assessment of your personal Mindset. What I mean here, is you need to really, objectively understand where & how YOU, as the primary business owner, are operating & behaving within your business. In this step, you get your head around how your personal beliefs, journey and behaviours are at play in your business right now and how this is either supporting or hindering your business’s ability to keep growing! *hint* – This is by far the hardest part of the business transformation! Doing an analysis of how YOU are impacting the business, both positively and negatively, takes a ton of courage and the willingness to be open and vulnerable to personal change and growth.

If you haven’t already, you must do a formal Competitive Strategic Assessment of your business including an internal organization review of the structure & work processes of your company. This is a key step in preparing your business for the growth it is either already undergoing or will go through in the near future. This strategic analysis should include 3 key components:


  • Identifying and committing to an overall generic strategy, based on the business’s position in the market and it’s long term growth potential.
  • An evaluation of the strategic environment, sometimes called a S.W.O.T. and/or a P.E.S.T. analysis. This will give you a clear indication of what your internal strengths and weaknesses are as well as the threats and opportunities that exist in the external environment.
  • Finally, an evaluation of the design & structure of your organization, including a top-down review of all the key departments, units, roles and work processes of your business. This review will inevitably show you the work gaps and bottlenecks in your organization, which could be choking off your business’s ability to operate at full efficiency. This will also show you where your business needs to modify it’s work processes including what specific work needs defining or redefining.

Next, you will need to zero in on and perform an effectiveness assessment of your major business processes to identify the immediate solutions required to get your business to the next level of growth. These key area reviews often include finance, technology, sales, production, logistics, service fulfillment and others as needed. Remember that throughout this process, you will be comparing your own personal behaviours against the work of the business. In other words, you will be evaluating where YOU are working in the business. Are you still performing all the accounts payable/receivables? Are you out on the production line, working at some part of the product assembly? Do you still manage all the shipping and order fulfillment? Where is YOUR personal ‘go-to’ favourite place to ‘hang out’ in your business? More importantly, do you actually NEED to be there??

You will evaluate, identify and implement solutions to the people needs of your business, including people systems & processes such as hiring, firing, motivating and designing the work of your people. This step naturally comes from Step #2, where you’re looking at the design of your organization.

you’ll need to design a complete 1-year and 3-year practical operating plan for the business, so you have a written blueprint of where you’re going and how you’re going to get there without the wheels falling off! This plan will also include very clear, specific and measurable RESULTS, so you know exactly where you’re going in your transformation process.

 You need to begin taking action on your blueprint using simple project management tools. The key with project management is to begin tracking your time, money, labour and other important resources as you build out the systems and take on the growth tasks of your business. This will allow you to stay on track with the work of the business and keep you focused on your results. Every successful business campaign can be run using the simple tools of project management. It really does change the game for you.
